Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh Sangeet Natak Akademi organised a special interview and studio recording with renowned classical vocalist Anjali Malkar of Pune for its archives on the theme “Compositions of the Gwalior and Jaipur Gharanas in the Context of Khayal Singing.”
The initiative is part of the Akademi’s ongoing efforts to preserve and document India’s rich classical music traditions. The programme was organised under the guidance of Akademi Chairman Prof. Jayant Khot, Vice-Chairperson Vibha Singh and Director Raj Kumar.
Malkar, who has studied classical vocal music under Kumudini Katdare, Pandit Vikas Kashalkar and Vidushi Veena Sahasrabuddhe, shared detailed insights into the distinctive features of the Gwalior and Jaipur gharanas, the structure of bandishes, raga development, rhythmic patterns and the importance of compositions in khayal singing.
She also presented a composition in Raga Malkauns and explained its musical nuances. The interaction covered traditional compositions, distinctive vocal styles and the role of the guru-shishya tradition in preserving these musical lineages.
The session was moderated by Prof. Srishti Mathur, Dean of the Faculty of Music at Bhatkhande Sanskriti University.
The archival recording is expected to serve as an important resource for documenting and preserving these classical traditions for future generations.
